Although I haven’t always been a resident of the Regent Park neighbourhood (as I am now), my upbringing in downtown Toronto was always closely connected to the area. For all of my elementary school years I attended Market Lane Public School (just down the road in the St. Lawrence area) which was filled with kids from surrounding neighbourhoods, including Regent Park. Later, in high school, I attended Jarvis Collegiate Institute, another downtown public school that was filled with kids from all over, but mainly those from the St. James Town and Regent Park communities.
In university, I went to Ryerson’s Fashion Program, and half way through my first year my parents decided to sell our family home in the King and Bathurst area, and move over to Queen and Parliament, an intersection that’s just a tad south of the ‘official’ start of Regent Park. Although it took me a little while at first to fall in love with living in the neighbourhood (rather than just visiting as I had done for most of my life), I soon became so attached to it that when I finally moved out of my parent’s house, I decided to buy a home in nearly the exact same location.
As you can imagine, the area is pretty special to me, and I’ve always been so proud of how multi-cultural it is, and truly representative of what life is like in downtown Toronto. Now, more than ever before, this once troubled pocket of Toronto is finally getting the TLC it deserves through the massive revitalization project that is currently underway.
This is why I’m incredibly excited and happy to support the Regent Park Gala 2017 to help raise much needed funds for sport programming in the community. The Regent Park gala supports 3TO6TEAM which is built on the understanding that youth involved in structured sport programming outside of regular school hours increases team building and leadership skills — helping them to less likely be involved in activities that put them at risk. By teaming up with the MLSE Foundation, 3TO6TEAM works to fund much needed sport programming for the community.
