From learning to ski at the age of three, taking Taekwondo as a kid,  to studying gymnastics throughout my tween and teen years, physical fitness has always been a big part of my life. Although I remember getting my first gym membership at the age of fifteen at the YMCA and going almost daily, lifting weights was never a big part of my routine up until recently. For as long as I can remember, I’ve been a ‘Cardio Queen‘, and feared lifting anything more than five pound dumbbells. The mere suggestion of lifting 10 pound weights? I would have thought you were crazy!

It wasn’t until I started training with my personal trainer, Jessica Morris, a couple of years ago that I started to become comfortable with working out with weights, and even came around to love them. These days, my body craves strength training with weights, and I can’t imagine working out with out them. Not only do they help sculpt your body, but they make you feel strong and powerful in a way that no amount of cardio can ever compare to.

When it comes to working out with weights, your stability and form are of the utmost importance to ensure that you don’t get injured. Making sure you have the right gear on is also key, and I always try to match my shoes to my workout (that’s right, not my outfit!) to enhance my performance.

A few weeks ago I had the opportunity to visit the Reebok Crossfit Liberty Village studio for a private workout alongside my girls Christina ‘The Athletarian‘ and Gloria of Rogue Stories, led by the beautiful and mega fit, Coach Amy. Upon arrival the three of us were spoiled by Reebok with a gym bag full of new workout gear to put on, including the new NANO 7 sneakers.

If you haven’t tried on a pair of Reebok NANO 7 shoes yet, the reason they’re ideal for CrossFit enthusiasts and #GirlsWhoLift, is for their combination of stability and flexibility. Unlike many workout shoes, these are much flatter than usual to give you a stable flat surface for your killer squat session or deadlifts. With such a flat shoe you might think it would be difficult to wear them when incorporating plyometrics and cardio into your weight training circuit, but the NANO 7 has no problem keep up thanks to the incredible flexibility that’s built into the rubber sole.

I will admit that I do not take part in CrossFit workouts regularly, so I was feeling a little intimidated walking into the Liberty Village studio. I was relieved to find that the workout that Coach Amy had put together for us was more in line with my favourite METCON3 classes at Equinox, as well the types of circuits I do with my personal trainer at Equinox, Amar Duggal.

Reebok Nano 7 workout

If you’re interested in trying Coach Amy’s workout too, the first half features three different exercises that are done every minute on the minute (EMOM), for 12 minutes. Start with 10 Kettle Bell Goblet Squats in the first minute, if you finish early use the remaining time to rest. Follow with 10 Box Jumps or Step Ups in the second minute, then 20 Mountain Climbers. Continue the rotation until you’ve reached 12 minutes.

The second portion of the workout is a 10 minute AMRAP, which means as many rounds as possible of the listed exercises. Here are circuit consisted of 10 Kettle Bell Swings, 10 Lunges, 10 Box Dips and 10 Calorie Row on the rowers.

As you can see, this workout consisted of stability training as well as plyometrics and the NANO 7 shoe had no problem keeping up with each and every exercise we performed through our workout.
