Day of The Dead will forever remind me of backpacking through Central America with my family when I was nine years old. We travelled throughout the south for nearly six months, just the four of us, and one of my most vivid memories is experiencing Day of The Dead firsthand. While the celebration may sound grim (the multi-day holiday focuses on gatherings of family and friends to pray and remember friends and family members who have died, and help support their spiritual journey), I remember being in awe of all of the spectacular colours and intricate designs that are traditionally used to celebrate the Day of The Dead. Personally, I have never been a huge fan of Halloween, but feel as though I can connect with the power and purpose behind the Mexican holiday that begins the day after our North American tradition.

Now, of course, I am a Canadian gal who is of half Korean and English-Scottish decent, so celebrating the Day of The Dead is not exactly an annual tradition for me, or my family. However, when my friends at Altos Tequila reached out about creating one of their Altos Plata Tequila cocktails in time for November 1st, I was definitely up for it. See below for how to make the ‘Hernandez‘ Altos Tequila cocktail recipe!
