With a minimal daily makeup routine (and total confusion when faced with how to properly apply an eyeliner) I’ve always relied on great skin to be my best beauty statement. But as I inch closer to my 30th birthday, I’ve come to realize more and more that achieving and maintaining great skin takes WERK, girl!

I’ll admit I’ve been blessed with pretty good skin over all, but, rest assured that one big night out or a food frenzy involving anything cheesy and fried will show up on my face (or body) the next day without fail. My skin from head to toe is extremely susceptible to breakouts and blemishes caused by food sensitivities, and when they happen, they’re itchy, uncomfortable and, well, unattractive.

Over the last few years I’ve discovered some habits that help keep my skin looking and feeling great on a daily basis. Best of all? They’re all simple things that anyone can do at home.

1. Hydrate

If you’ve been slacking on drinking your 8 glasses of water a day, you might want to think again. My face is always the first to show signs of dehydration when I haven’t had enough water, and I honestly do notice a more radiant glow to my skin when I drink tons of water. If you think drinking water is boring, trying adding fresh lemon slices, herbs and/or fruits to your water to give it some more flavour in a natural way that won’t add sugar.

2. Green Juice

Drinking a detoxifying green smoothie in the mornings is something I was introduced to when I moved back to Toronto from the U.K., and have never looked back. Drinking a veggie-packed smoothie every day has been an amazing habit that has hugely benefited everything from my health to hair and skin. 3. Omega-3

Omega-3 fats have a wide range of health benefits, and can easily be consumed daily by taking fish oil or fish oil capsules. While it may sound unappetizing (and trust me, it does not taste great) Omega-3 fatty acids have been proven to be effective in the treatment and prevention of hundreds of medical conditions that include everything from cancer to skin issues like eczema and psoriasis. Not only do Omaga-3’s help your skin, but they’re also known to help thicken hair and nails. Winning!

4. Moisturize

If your skin is feeling dry and dull, there’s no easier cure than simply making moisturizer your new best friend. While it’s easy to focus only on the face, don’t forget that your skin is your body’s biggest organ and the rest of it needs moisturizing too! 5. Sunscreen

Like it or not, sunscreen is an imperative part of any skincare routine, and yes, that includes your full body! Unfortunately I do have quite a bit of sun damage on my skin from my days as a sun-worshipping teen who refused to wear any sunscreen, but, now as an adult, I do my best to stay protected all year round. Similar to finding a great moisturizer, try to find a sunscreen with the right weight, application and protection for you so it doesn’t feel like a chore to apply.

6. Cleanse at Night

Did you know that you only really need to cleanse at night? It’s true! Yes, of course you want to make sure that all of the grime collected on your face from a day out in the city is removed before you go to bed, but don’t be afraid of the natural oils your skin produces while you sleep. In the mornings, feel free to simply splash your face with lukewarm water instead and carry on with the rest of your routine.

7. Exfoliate

Although it’s not advised to exfoliate every day, I like to give my skin a good deep exfoliation at least once a week. In between, I like to do a gentle exfoliation with a Luffa in the shower, and a gentle exfoliation on my face using a face cloth or a light exfoliating face wash that’s safe for daily use.

8. Overnight Masks

Overnight masks are the absolute best, just be sure to look for ones that apply like a clear moisturizer, and won’t ruin your bed sheets (or scare anyone who might be sleeping next to you at night). Overnight masks are often super-duper hydrating and help you wake up with an epic glow that will have people asking if you just went for a facial.
