As much as I love winter, and even winter dressing, there is nothing I hate more during the colder months than having to wear stockings. In my opinion, they’re uncomfortable, annoying, and ruin any great outfit look.
While I’m most definitely not one of those girls you’d see running around town on a Friday night, in the middle of a snow storm, without a coat on to avoid paying for coat cheque at their club of choice, I can relate to not wanting a great dress to suffer just because of a pair of black tights.
So how do you bare legs in the winter like a boss? Here are my 5 style tips for looking totally fierce, even when it’s freaking freezing.
First and foremost, you gotta keep those stems smooth! If you’re gonna bare legs in winter, you absolutely cannot get caught dead with any ‘winter growth’ on your legs. During the summer, I can often be found with a razor in my makeup bag for any emergency touch ups, and that doesn’t change come winter. Getting a smooth shave using a Gillette Venus Swirl razor and shave gel is just as much a part of my morning routine as taking a morning shower.
2. Wear Closed Toe Shoes
Now now, let’s remember that it’s not actually summer out and one of the key ways to rock bare legs in the winter without looking totally ridiculous is to make sure you wear closed toe shoes and boots. Bare legs when it’s snowing is one thing, wearing sandals is another. So don’t do it! In my opinion, a gorgeous ankle bootie always look pretty fabulous when showing off your stems in the winter.
3. Watch Your Hem Height
Looking chic with bare legs in the winter really comes down to being mindful of hem length (or height). Personally, I tend to stick to knee length or lower during the winter, unless I’m wearing an amazing floor-length gown with a thigh high slit. If you’re thinking of going mid-thigh or higher, see my next point.
4. Wear a Long Coat
Let’s face it, no matter what you do, bare legs look hot in the winter, but it’s still cold outside. You’ve gotta shield your exposed skin with a stylish long coat, that *bonus* will look amazing when paired with a shorter hem underneath. Yes, knee length or higher is acceptable here! I don’t think there’s anything sexier than a bit of bare leg poking out from a full-length coat, just make sure you’re not wearing a human sleeping bag.
5. Travel In Style
If you’re going to bare legs in the winter like a boss, you gotta travel like one too. Sorry, but that means no walking far lengths or public transportation for you. Either you’re hopping in your car, or getting into an Uber so you don’t have to be outside for more than 30 seconds getting from door to door.
That isn’t so hard now is it? Follow these instructions and no one will dare question your decision to show off your silky smooth legs in the middle of the winter. Here I’m wearing a dress from Zara, coat by Emanuel Ungaro and shoes from Aldo.
